James is an indie / alternative rock group from the UK. James was formed in Manchester in 1982 by founding members Jim Glennie, Tim Booth, Larry Gott, and Gavan Whelan. The group was signed one year later to Anthony H. Wilson's infamous Factory record label, but only a few years later were snapped up by the major label Sire Records Company. James's early 1980s folk / indie sound would garner them impressive underground status before they would become big chart toppers from the mid-to-late 1980s.
