Gheorghe Zamfir founded his own "taraf" (small ensemble) in 1969, after leaving Orchestra Ciocîrlia. The original line-up consisted of Ion Drăgoi (violin), Ion Lăceanu (flutes), Dumitru Fărcaș (taragot), Toni Iordache (cymbalum) and Mihai Tudor (double bass).
