The Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra -- or just -- was originally organized by the drummer Mel Lewis. Lewis recruited the trumpeter Thad Jones as co-leader. If only the leaders are mentioned at the front cover, please make sure to credit the orchestra in the credit section. The orchestra came into existence as a rehearsal band around 1965.The debut appearance of the orchestra, at the Village Vanguard jazzclub, was Monday February 7, 1966. That is where the legendary Monday Night Concert Series started. The band performed ca 12 years in its original incarnation and did world wide tours. In 1978 Thad Jones moved to Copenhagen (Denmark) and led the Danish Radio Big Band for several years.
