Formed in mid-1977 in Dublin, for a time the Virgin Prunes were "the most overtly subversive rock group ever to come out of the genre" (Mark Prendergast, "Irish Rock"). Their reputation was built on their outrageous stage performances and supported by a wayward and individual collection of record releases. Singers and , along with third vocalist , guitarist , bassist and drummer , released their first single in 1981. Pod soon left to be replaced by , who left around a year later, to be replaced in turn by . They also released the first three parts of the 'A New Form Of Beauty' series in 1981.
